When the forecast dropped below -30\u00b0C, I decided to test my system properly. There were cliffs nearby that blocked most wind. Only a soft breeze during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarp weight: 480 g<br>Stakes (8 \u00d7 12 g): 96 g<br>Ridgeline rope: ~50 g<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insulation System \u2013 Layered for Extreme Cold<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Total insulation weight: ~6 kg<br>Transported using a fishing sled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was not ultralight. This allowed the outer quilts to hang a few centimeters lower so every layer could loft fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clew suspension kept all quilts tensioned evenly and eliminated cold gaps. Steam was rising visibly from my hands and legs. That solved the issue immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top Cover Performance &amp; Condensation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The top cover significantly increased interior warmth. Based on feel, interior temperature likely increased by 10\u201315\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, condensation accumulated heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of extreme cold, moisture froze immediately rather than forming liquid water. In these conditions, frozen condensation was not problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In future setups, slightly venting the top cover would likely reduce frost buildup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sleeping Position Surprise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I normally sleep on my side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That night, during hammock camping at -30\u00b0C, I slept entirely on my back \u2014 comfortably \u2014 for 10 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system felt stable and supportive enough that I never felt the need to turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Morning After -30\u00b0C<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clothing was stored inside a sealed bag to prevent freezing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boots were not frozen. Pack up.
