Down Underquilt — you have been waiting for this one

I’ve been getting asked about a Need for Trees down underquilt for a long time.

And I’ve been gatekeeping it.

For about a year, actually. Sorry.

The truth is that making a good down underquilt is quite a bit more complicated than it might look. Finding the right materials, figuring out the construction, and getting the production process working properly took time. For quite a while, I simply didn’t have the resources to make these the way I wanted to.

But I’m finally dedicating myself to producing them.

So here it is.

Built around the insulation

I wanted an underquilt that combines good insulation, low weight, and a suspension system that actually lets you adjust it to your hammock.

This underquilt uses 400 g or 500 g of 800 FP Polish goose down, with 40% overfill, 10 H-baffles, and a differential cut to help the down fully loft and maintain consistent insulation.

The quilt measures 195 × 135 cm and is made from lightweight 10D high-tenacity ripstop nylon.

Adjustable Clew Suspension

The clew suspension uses adjustable cords with sliding knots, so you can change how tightly the underquilt sits against your hammock.

Pull it closer in colder weather to minimize gaps and drafts. On warmer nights, lower it slightly to create an air gap and let some heat escape.

The adjustable suspension also makes the quilt suitable for a wide range of hammock sizes and shapes.

Two Down Options

You can choose between 400 g and 500 g of 800 FP Polish goose down.

Both versions use 40% overfill. The baffle dimensions are adjusted to match the amount of down, giving the down enough room to loft properly.

The 500 g version has an estimated comfort temperature of around -6°C. This is currently an estimate — I haven’t completed proper field testing yet, so I will update the rating as I collect more real-world data.

The down is RDS certified and is regular, non-hydrophobic down.

Made to Order in Lithuania

I don’t keep these underquilts in stock. Each one is made to order in my workshop in Mažeikiai, Lithuania.

Production time is up to two weeks.

What is the difference between the 400 g and 500 g versions?

The main difference is the amount of down and the corresponding baffle size. The 500 g version provides more insulation and is intended for colder conditions.

Yes. Since every underquilt is made to order, custom sizes and other modifications are possible.
