Gilis – 360 cm Camping Hammock Engineered for Real Outdoor Comfort

Gilis is a high-performance camping hammock system built for outdoor users who expect durability, modularity and proper sleep in the field.

With an extended 360 cm (approx. 12 ft) length, it allows a naturally flatter diagonal lay and noticeably improved overnight comfort. Its interchangeable zip architecture enables individual components to be replaced or upgraded — creating a system designed to last, not to be discarded.

Handcrafted in Lithuania from high-strength 40D Hex Ripstop nylon, free from harmful chemical treatments.

Built for repeated use. Designed for long-term ownership.

A Modular System — Not Just a Hammock

Gilis is a modular camping hammock designed for long-term outdoor use. It is built around a fully interchangeable full-length zipper architecture that allows individual components to be replaced or upgraded without replacing the entire hammock.

Unlike a standard camping hammock with mosquito net, Gilis functions as a true modular system.

This means:

  • Removable mosquito net can be swapped for a top cover

  • Damaged bug net can be replaced independently

  • Hammock body can be replaced if worn

  • Seasonal configurations are possible

However, most camping hammocks with mosquito nets in Europe offer removable nets — but not full component interchangeability.
Very few offer true component interchangeability.

Gilis is designed as a long-term system — not a disposable product.

Extended 360 cm (Approx. 12 ft) for Proper Diagonal Lay

Length is one of the most important factors in hammock comfort. Because of this, shorter hammocks often create shoulder pressure and calf ridge.
At 360 cm (approx. 12 ft), Gilis sits in the category of a true 12 ft camping hammock, providing enough space for a naturally flatter diagonal lay, reducing calf ridge and shoulder pressure.

The result:

  • More relaxed body position

  • Improved overnight comfort

  • Better support for taller users

Comfort here is structural — not accidental.

Top Cover Option — Extending the System

Gilis functions as a high-performance camping hammock with mosquito net during warm-weather use. The fully removable mosquito net attaches with the same interchangeable zipper system used throughout the platform.

When temperatures drop, the bug net can be replaced with an optional top cover.

Top cover benefits:

  • Increased wind protection

  • Improved heat retention in colder seasons

  • Reduced drafts

  • Warmer microclimate inside the hammock

It transforms Gilis from a summer mosquito setup into a cold-weather capable system.

You are not buying separate products — you are expanding the same platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 360 cm (approx. 12 ft) long enough for my height?

For most users up to around 195 cm, this 12 ft camping hammock provides a comfortable diagonal lay. If you are taller or prefer even more space, we can produce longer versions on request.

Should I go longer?

Longer hammocks generally allow a flatter diagonal position and improved overall comfort. If comfort is your priority and pack size is less critical, going longer can make sense. If unsure, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to advise.

Do I need the second layer?

The second layer is mainly designed for inserting a sleeping pad and preventing it from shifting during the night. It also adds structure and durability. If you use an underquilt and do not need a pad sleeve, a single layer is usually sufficient.

How much weight and volume does the second layer add?

In 40D fabric, the second layer adds approximately 300 g and about one third additional packed volume.

In 10D fabric, it adds approximately 140 g and roughly one quarter additional packed volume.

Choose 40D for maximum durability. Choose 10D if minimizing weight and bulk is your priority.

Is the second layer enough for cold weather?

No. The second layer helps secure a sleeping pad, but it does not replace insulation. For colder conditions, you will still need an underquilt or properly rated sleeping pad.

Can I just use my sleeping pad?

Yes. The double-layer version is specifically designed to hold a sleeping pad securely between the layers, reducing movement during sleep. With the single-layer version, a pad can still be used, but it may shift more easily.

Do I need a top cover?

A top cover is not required for normal summer use. It becomes useful in colder or windy conditions, where it reduces drafts, improves heat retention, and creates a warmer internal microclimate. It replaces the bug net using the same interchangeable zipper system.

What is the difference between 10D and 40D fabric?

40D fabric offers higher abrasion resistance, greater durability, and better tolerance to rough use — including dog nails.

10D fabric reduces overall weight and packed volume but is less abrasion-resistant.

Choose based on your balance between durability and weight savings.

Can the fabric handle dogs?

The 40D Hex Ripstop fabric has strong abrasion resistance and handles dog nails surprisingly well compared to ultralight materials. However, sharp claws can damage any technical fabric, so care is still recommended.

Can you make it wider?

Yes. We can sew additional fabric panels to increase width on request. If you need a custom width or other modifications, send us an email and we’ll discuss what’s possible.

Where is Gilis manufactured?

  1. Esse Woods (verified owner)

My journey started with a cheap no name hammock.

I loved the concept but I wanted something more comfortable and easier to use. I wanted to buy something European and found Need for trees among other makers and it just felt ”right”.

I slept my first night in my Gilis hammock, and the Thermaclew underquilt two days ago and it’s the best outdoor experience I’ve ever had.

Last night, me and my wife slept together in the hammock in our garden, and she said it’s the best retreat experience she’s ever had in her life.

5/5 all my friends will buy 🙂

  2. Michael R. (verified owner)

The chosen length and width of the hammock makes for one of the most comfortable hammock experiences possible. Very spacious and enough space to find that good sweetspot! The construction and materials are top notch quality, and work perfectly. The zippers are smooth and fast, the ridgeline is nicely set up and can be adjusted very comfortably with the whoopie sling. Daumantas was so nice and put in a peak-shelf and ridgeline-organizer, which are very handy to keep my valuable items in the hammock, as well as snacks, water and phone. Also very fast and friendly email responses incase you have any questions. I will be recommening his products to everyone!

The carry bag is also great and the whole hammock packs into it very easily, amazing how little space it takes up in the bag, truly a great ultra-light product.

  3. Bastian (verified owner)

I am very happy with the Gilis hammock, it was a reccomandation of a friend. I am 189cm and other hammock were quite small for my size. this one really fits me. the zippers are made of metal and make some klinging noise when the bugnet is closed but i wrapped it in ductape and thats fine. the quality of the material feels really good, better than TTTM hammocks. also the contact to Daumantas via insta is very nice and quick. thank you 🙂

  4. Max (verified owner)

Very happy with my new hammock after the first night spend in the archipelago.

I’m 185cm and this hammock, being over 55cm longer than my previous one, seems to be the perfect length for me.

The hammock came quickly over mail, in a neat package with my whoopie slings already attached for convenience. With greetings and setup instructions from Daumantas.

Can recommend this hammock to everyone!

  5. Leve

The fabric feels absolutely fantastic on the skin and has a really high-quality touch. The workmanship is outstanding, with every detail well finished. The hammock is very thoughtfully designed, offering perfect dimensions for comfort and relaxation. Setup is incredibly quick and easy, which makes it ideal for outdoor use. Overall, an excellent product!

  6. Kris (verified owner)

Couldn’t be happier with my hammock. The quality and feel of the fabric is something I haven’t experienced before, so soft! Set up was a walk in the park even though the suspension system was something I had not tried before.
The ridgeline organisering was a nice touch as well.

Everything packs up great into a small package which is easy to fit into the side pocket of my backpack.

Hats off for Daumantas. He was super nice with any questions I had and sure knows how to make a great product!
